2009 5K Times Disclaimer

I want start by saying thank you to everyone who pre-registered.  That made the registration process go much more smoothly, and saves us the expense of mailing t-shirts after the event.

As for times, I apologize that we were not able to give most of you your time on Saturday.  You are working with some inexperienced 5K people trying to run this event as best as we can.  I took this project on last year with the assumption that an experienced 5K person was going to help with the event.  That hasn't happened and I have been left to do the best that I can. 

While we made some improvements over last year, I do not feel that the first dozen or so times are correct.  My timer is new to this as well, and although she said she understood her job, I think it took about a dozen runners before she really understood how the recording system worked.  While I know we got the correct order of runners for the purpose of awards, I'm not so certain of the times.  From what I can tell, they are accurate to within 60 seconds.  I know how much of a difference 60 seconds makes for a runner in training, so I apologize for that inaccuracy.

We have already discussed what changes we need to make for next year so that runners will know their time as soon as they cross the finish line, and we are tossing around some ideas to help people from outside of town follow the route better so that no one will get lost. For example, next year we plan:

• to have the timer on the finish line calling out times as people cross the finish line
• to find some alternative way to mark the route on the pavement

Thank you to everyone for participating and helping us learn how these events work. I hope you will give us another shot next year for our 3rd annual 5K.  After all, third time is the charm!
