The building known as the KD Center used to be the old sleeping quarters for the men coming from Trenton, MO and Silvis, IL, and Des Moines, IA. Eldon was the terminal on the Rock Island railroad between these two points on the Rock Island line. The KD Center, as it is known, was doomed for demolition in 1991.
It was requested by 3 different groups that it be saved. New Hope Lodge 480 of the Masons, GATE (Gothic Area Tourism Committee) and American Legion Post # 206, asked the city council for permission to attempt this renovation. It was done in the years of 1991 & 92. This was accomplished with the help of many volunteers and it is a credit to the community. It is one of the things that can be accomplished if people put their heads and hearts into a project.
The KD Center, located one block off State Highway 16 in Eldon, is the hub of community activities and the site of varied activities during American Gothic Days, held the second weekend of June. On Saturday a colorful parade marches down the main street and the celebration theme centers around the American Gothic House. It can be rented for different occasions. Some of the activities that go on here are the following: used as a meeting place for groups, Lions, Masons, American Legion, senior citizens' meals, bingo, wedding receptions, anniversaries, etc. It also has a very nice shelter house that goes along with it.
