Preparing for the Photo

In order to create a parody of American Gothic, you might consider bringing some of the following items to personalize your creation:
- A smile (in place of the traditional somber expressions)
- An implement of your trade (in place of the hay fork)
- A piece of jewelry (in place of the family heirloom broach)
- A camera (in place of a painter)
The American Gothic House Center provides various sizes of the apron, overalls, suit jackets, antique glasses and hay forks so you can go away with your very own classic version of American Gothic. In case of inclement weather, we even have a cut out version so you can take your photo inside!
The Center staff and volunteers are happy to go out and help you take your photo with your own camera. If you forget your camera, we can still help you. You can purchase a 4" x 6" print taken with the Center camera and printed on our handy photo printer for $2.00 per photo. (Camera and printer services were made possible with a grant from the Wapello County Foundation.)
