Scouts & Group Programs

Pioneer Ridge Nature Center is dedicated to providing quality education services to all interested parties. Many programs are available for scouts and public organizations of all ages and sizes. A few of the program opportunities are listed below, but others are available as requested.

Finding Your Way: Students will learn to use a compass and set out on a small orienteering course to test their skills. We will also discuss other ways to find your way in the wild. This program may also include map making and following.

Tree and Plant Identification: We are lucky enough to have prairie, savannah and forest areas at our sites. This can come in handy when we try to identify the various trees and plants found in Iowa. We will take a hike to discover native and non-native Iowa plants.

Overnight Camping and Programs: Come out to Pioneer Ridge Nature Area for a night of primitive camping. Students will learn to cook over a fire, go on a night hike and more. An overnight camp can include up to three programs. (scout groups only)

Live Animals: This program is an opportunity for participants to meet the members of our live animal collection up close and personal. Participants will have the opportunity to hold and touch some of these animals while learning how each survives in the wild.

Survival Skills: Ever wondered what you would do if you were lost in the middle of nowhere? This is your chance to learn some basic survival skills such as building a shelter, finding edible plants, finding a water source and building a one-match fire. Come ready to do some work.

Basic Astronomy: The night sky has awed many throughout the years. Stars have given travelers on sea and land the correct direction to travel. Join us to learn the basics of astronomy using star charts, binoculars and a telescope.

Winter Animal Tracks: Once the snow has fallen, it becomes easy to find animal tracks. Participants will go on a hike in search of animal tracks and signs. We will discuss how to identify the animal and what these tracks can tell us about the animals behavior.

Pond Study: The creatures of a pond can tell us the health of that water. Spend some time getting dirty netting small pond creatures and learning what these creatures can tell us about the pond community. This program can be extended to also include chemical testing of the water and/or microscopic water study.

Fishing: Fish play an important part in our lives as well as the life of a pond. We will learn safe fishing techniques, how to tie fishing knots, how to cast and more. Participants will then have the opportunity to fish in our pond (catch and release only). We will provide the rods and reels. You will need to bring the bait.

Archery: Archery is one of the safest sports available. Learn archery safety and techniques and try your hand a target shooting. Participants must be at least 10 years of age to participate in this program.
