Notice of Civil Service Test for Wapello County Deputy Sheriff


The Wapello County Civil Service Commission will conduct civil service testing for the position of Deputy Sheriff, in accordance with Chapter 341A of the Iowa Code.

Applications will be available at the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, 330 W. 2nd St. Ottumwa, Iowa or at  Applications will be accepted until the close of business September 26. 2022 by either hand delivering the application, through email ( or by U.S. Mail. 

The starting wage for the position of Wapello County Deputy Sheriff is approximately $24.24/hr. coupled with an excellent benefit package.

There will be two testing dates for the physical agility and written POST test October 8, 2022 and October 15, 2022.  If an individual tests on Oct 8th and fails any part of the testing they are invited back for retesting on Oct 15th.   It should be noted that if a person only shows up for the Oct 15th testing and fails any part there are no further testing dates. 

The physical agility will commence promptly at 9:00am at Ottumwa High School Schafer Stadium with entry on the Center Ave. side.   Those who pass the physical agility will take the written POST examination immediately following at the Wapello County Law Enforcement Center located at 330 West 2nd Street, Ottumwa, IA. 

Preference will be given to Certified Peace Officers and they do not have to do the physical agility or POST test.  Certified Peace Officers will start at $27.93/hr.  The position of Deputy Sheriff requires applicants to work nights/holidays/weekends depending on the scheduling. Successful applicants must be able to multi-task and work under stressful situations.
